Background of the study
Regional accents significantly influence the pronunciation of English, reflecting the speaker's cultural and linguistic background. Among Yoruba speakers in Lagos, the influence of indigenous phonetic features creates a distinctive regional accent that affects the articulation of English sounds (Akinyemi, 2023). These accents are marked by variations in vowel quality, consonant articulation, and prosodic features, which are deeply rooted in the Yoruba phonological system. As Lagos is a cosmopolitan hub where English serves as a lingua franca, the interplay between indigenous pronunciation and global language standards creates both challenges and opportunities for effective communication (Okeke, 2024). This study examines how Yoruba accents modify English pronunciation and the resultant implications for language teaching, media broadcasting, and social interactions. By utilizing acoustic analysis and perceptual testing, the research aims to document the specific phonetic deviations and propose strategies to enhance clarity while preserving cultural identity (Chinwe, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite recognition of the role of regional accents, the impact of Yoruba accents on English pronunciation among Lagos speakers remains underexplored. Such accents can lead to deviations from standard English pronunciation, affecting academic and professional communication (Ibrahim, 2023). The absence of comprehensive studies on these phonetic variations limits the development of targeted language training programs. This study seeks to fill this gap by systematically analyzing the influence of Yoruba phonology on English pronunciation, thereby providing insights necessary for improving language instruction and media practices.
