Background of the study
Regional accents significantly influence the pronunciation of English, reflecting the speaker's cultural and linguistic background. Among Yoruba speakers in Lagos, the influence of indigenous phonetic features creates a distinctive regional accent that affects the articulation of English sounds (Akinyemi, 2023). These accents are marked by variations in vowel quality, consonant articulation, and prosodic features, which are deeply rooted in the Yoruba phonological system. As Lagos is a cosmopolitan hub where English serves as a lingua franca, the interplay between indigenous pronunciation and global language standards creates both challenges and opportunities for effective communication (Okeke, 2024). This study examines how Yoruba accents modify English pronunciation and the resultant implications for language teaching, media broadcasting, and social interactions. By utilizing acoustic analysis and perceptual testing, the research aims to document the specific phonetic deviations and propose strategies to enhance clarity while preserving cultural identity (Chinwe, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Despite recognition of the role of regional accents, the impact of Yoruba accents on English pronunciation among Lagos speakers remains underexplored. Such accents can lead to deviations from standard English pronunciation, affecting academic and professional communication (Ibrahim, 2023). The absence of comprehensive studies on these phonetic variations limits the development of targeted language training programs. This study seeks to fill this gap by systematically analyzing the influence of Yoruba phonology on English pronunciation, thereby providing insights necessary for improving language instruction and media practices.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the influence of Yoruba regional accents on English pronunciation.
  2. To analyze phonetic deviations in Yoruba-accented English.
  3. To propose instructional strategies that enhance clarity without compromising cultural identity.

Research questions:

  1. How do Yoruba regional accents affect English pronunciation in Lagos?
  2. What specific phonetic deviations are observed in Yoruba-accented English?
  3. What measures can improve pronunciation clarity among Yoruba speakers?

Research hypotheses:

  1. Yoruba regional accents significantly influence English pronunciation.
  2. Specific phonetic deviations correlate with Yoruba phonological features.
  3. Targeted pronunciation training can improve clarity while preserving cultural identity.

Significance of the study (100 words):
This study is significant as it explores how regional accents impact English pronunciation among Yoruba speakers in Lagos. The findings will benefit language educators and broadcasters by informing training programs that enhance communication clarity while respecting indigenous identity (Akinyemi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the influence of regional accents on English pronunciation among Yoruba speakers in Lagos, focusing on acoustic analysis and pedagogical implications.

Definitions of terms:

  1. Regional Accents: Distinctive pronunciation patterns associated with a specific geographic area.
  2. English Pronunciation: The articulation and phonetic realization of English sounds.
  3. Yoruba Speakers: Native speakers of Yoruba in Lagos.
